These are the thermophilic microbial mats found in or/and at hot springs in the Yellowstone National Park. The yellow part is most likely the bacterial mat containing high temperature microbials (>70 degree). (Of course, there may also be some inorganic minerials, such as S and ferric salt). The green part at the edge of stream is the bacterial mat that only tolerates temperature lower than 70 degree. Also, not shown in the picture, there are beautiful blue bacteria found in the centre of the hot springs which can tolerate T higher than 175 degree.
