what is the expected number of random numbers, uniformally distributed from
0 to 1 needed for the sum to be greater than 1?

you probably meant for the # of IIDs... here

the independance is crucial.

both answers are good estimates of the correct

result :) The expectation is actually between 2 and 3. And it is a very familiar number to us :)

But this problem is actually harder than it looks. Needs some calculation and patience :)
