该校最强的学科是社会科学、人文科学以及生命科学。耶鲁大学管理研究生院于1978年创设了独特的课程——公营和私营企业专业管理（Pub1ic＆PrivateManagement）课程，它着重公营及非赢利机构的专业管理训练。课程安排有六成是授课，四成为个案研究，后者有一半是公办或非赢利机构的个案。耶鲁大学的企管硕士不叫MBA而是MPPM，其来源也在于此。

    耶鲁大学模仿英国牛津大学和剑桥大学的模式，从20世纪30年代开始实行“住宿学院”制。每个“住宿学院”约有350—500名本科生，男女比例对等，配有院长和学监各一名。12个“住宿学院”拥有自己的餐厅、客厅、庭院、图书馆、娱乐室等。耶鲁大学希冀借此独特的制度使其学生所受的教育不仅仅局限于课堂知识，而且注重于在起居社交时所学到的人生道理，并从中获得终生的友谊。

    作为一所私立大学，耶鲁大学由耶鲁集团管理，董事会由18人组成。另有6名学校官员负责日常事务。大学每年财政预算为13亿美元，主要来自各种基金、合约、捐赠及学生的学费和住宿费等，其中超过1.1亿美元将用于学生的经济资助。

　耶鲁大学与中国的教育交流，是其历史上最早的国际性教育交流，已有近两百年的历史。早在18世纪初，耶鲁医学院的毕业生就来到广州附近行医传教。容闳于1854年获耶鲁大学的文学学士学位，成为历史上第一位在美国大学毕业的中国人。

    　1872年，经清政府批准，容闳组建“大清幼童出洋肄业局”，连续组织了4批共120名少年赴美求学，其中先后有20多位在耶鲁学习。1901年，耶鲁大学成立了旨在对华传教的“耶鲁在中国（Yale in China）”，后更名为“雅礼协会”，并在湖南长沙、湖北武汉等地创办了学校和医院。80年代以来，耶鲁大学与我国的教育交流合作迅速发展。
